Winemaking Notes: Grapes are manually harvested. After fermentation, the grapes are pressed, and the juice is racked to barrel. Full malolactic fermentation occurs. The wine ages for 8 months in 25% new french oak and 75% second and third fill barrels. Bottled unfiltered.
Wine Notes: Gamay does very well in Michigan and might just become one of the region's defining reds. The Big Little Underdog is a delicious example produced from Gamay grown on their Stony Point Vineyard. This red wine has a delicate color and notes of fresh berry fruit, black pepper, and subtle oak. Medium-bodied and vibrant. Pairings are endless.
About the Name: The Laing brothers remember the crunch of leaves on the playground and the crisp fall air tingling their noses. Taking turns, they helped one another gain momentum toward the ultimate swing experience…the UNDERDOG.
Sustainability: Sustainability is central to the Laings’ farming philosophy. Cover cropping has been the primary weed management strategy since 2020. Clovers and low grasses are planted under vine to suppress weeds, increase biodiversity, improve soil structure, build organic matter, and sequester carbon. Custom compost blends are developed in collaboration with Morgan Composting to promote long term soil health. The vineyards are MAEAP certified across four cropping and farmstead systems. The majority of the vineyards are dry farmed, relying on natural rainfall rather than irrigation.
