We were excited to recently discover Podere Le Ripi, the neighbor fo our longtime collaborator, Mastrojanni, in primo part of Montalcino, Castelnuovo dell’Abate. Winemaker and now partner Sebastian Nasello welcomed us warmly for a marathon visit, tour and tasting that continued into town and ended at his natural wine bar in town. We were hooked and made our first order on the spot.

Podere Le Ripi began in the late 1990s as Francesco Illy’s personal project, built around the idea of creating a true farm, not just a winery. Today it is a fully biodynamic estate operating as a living ecosystem, with vines alongside olive trees, gardens, bees, and animals, all shaped by a collaborative, community-driven culture. And speaking of winery, this design is like Gaudi meets Wright. its the tuscan version of the Guggenheim. Such an incredible place to learn about, make and drink wine. Wow.

The wines reflect that approach: expressive, energetic, and rooted in Montalcino, with a clear sense of art and nature and that “sense of place" is defined as much by people and energy as is it by land and terroir.

  • Podere Le Ripi 2020 'Amore e Magia' Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
    The Wine Spectator
    Rating: 94 (6/15/2025)

Cherry, raspberry and blood orange fruit is aligned with eucalyptus, tomato leaf and mineral flavors in this ripe, succulent red. Assertive tannins take hold, leaving a muscular grip on the finish, yet there's a lasting impression of fruit. Best from 2028 through 2043.

  • Podere Le Ripi 2023 'Cappuccetto Rosa' Toscano Rosato IGT
    Vinous
    Rating: 89 (3/17/2026)

With a translucent ruby/violet hue, the 2023 Cappuccetto Rosa mixes sour cherries, citrus zest and nuances of wet stone. It's soothingly round with a pretty inner sweetness and cooling acidity to lift its blackberry fruit. This cleans up beautifully—long and fresh with a subtle saline tinge.
  • Podere Le Ripi 2020 'Amore e Magia' Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
    Vinous
    Rating: 94 (11/26/2024)

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Amore e Magia opens with an intense blend of blood oranges, ground cloves, cinnamon sticks and crushed stone embellishing black cherries. Silken and sapid, this displays notable weight offset by zesty acidity as vibrantly ripe red and blue fruits swirl throughout. Edgy tannins tug at the cheeks as the 2020 finishes dramatically long and spicy with notes of violet pastille and a sensation of liquid stone. Nicely done.
