Vineyard Notes: Sourced 100% from the Powerline Estate Vineyard. Charles planted the 38-acre estate vineyard in the heart of the Walla Walla Valley. The soils are well-drained with cobblestone river rocks and underlying layers of sand and gravel deposits, allowing vines to develop very deep and strong roots. The deep sand and silt below the stones bring a great purity to the grapes, while high elevations keep acids high, producing very well-balanced wines with remarkable complex characters.

Farming Notes: All vineyards are sustainably farmed, following organic principles. Zero pesticides, zero herbicides and zero adjuncts are used. Harvest is manual.

Winemaking Notes: 2.3 tons per acre. 100% whole cluster fermentation in concrete tank with native yeast, 51 days on skins. 19 months aged on lees in 100% neutral French oak demi-muids. Bottled from gross lees, unfined and unfiltered. Vegan friendly.

The 2020 Grenache The Boy lifts from the glass with a dusty floral mix of crushed blackberries and white pepper. This is round and vividly fruity on the palate with brisk acids that balance nicely, as savory herbal tones resonate throughout. The Boy tapers off with subtle grippy tannins, leaving nuances of licorice and exotic spice to linger. I love the balance here.

Opening to a nose of candied red fruit, confected cherries and freshly opened red flowers, the 2020 The Boy offers picturesque crunchy red fruit with soft savory and spicy elements in the glass. Medium-bodied, the palate is fresh with the lift of 100% whole-cluster fermentation, offering succulent floral and confected red fruit flavors before showing hints of umami and savory notions over the focused, fine, mineral-laced finish. The wine rested for 18 months in neutral French oak barrels. Just under 9,000 bottles produced.

Coming all from the Powerline Vineyard on the southern side of the Walla Walla Valley, the 2020 Grenache The Boy has a terrific perfume of wild strawberries, cherries, rose petals, and toasted spices. It’s clean, medium to full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, and has ultra-fine tannins. This is all 363 Clone of Grenache from 2012 plantings that saw no destemming, a full 51 days on skins, and aging all in neutral oak demi-muids.

#20 on Top 100 Wines of the USA This is perfumed, with dried strawberry bush, ripe cherry, star anise, black cardamom and spiced orange peel. Lots of dried flower undertones. Its medium- to full-bodied with layers of tight but juicy tannins and bright acidity cutting through. Its so alive and vibrant, with cocoa- dusted red berries jumping out of the glass. It shows depth and power, but in an elegant way, with a delicate, ethereal feel. Drink or hold.
