About Tempranillo Blanco: Tempranillo Blanco is surely one of Spain's most esoteric grapes. It is a mutation of Tempranillo which was discovered in a vineyard in Rioja in 1988 and after being sent to a lab for testing, was found to be a completely unique wine variety. They found that Tempranillo Blanco appears to be the result of a natural, spontaneous mutation. One that came about during the growth of a secondary shoot on a Tempranillo vine. This new variety gives more generous fruit flavors than Rioja’s traditional white grapes like Viura and Malvasia, and it carries much higher levels of malic acid, giving a fresher, more crisp white than is often possible with more traditional clones. While not easy to grow, the improvement in wine quality was clear, and in 2007, Rioja’s regulator officially approved Tempranillo Blanco for use in Rioja Blanco.
Vineyard Notes: Grapes come from 35 -year-old vines in Viña Ilusión's certified organic estate vineyards. Although they are located at a bit of a high altitude, around 600-700 meters, the influence of the Cidacos Valley and the microclimate of this area allow them to grow Mediterranean plants such as olive and almond trees as well as their vineyards. On top of being organically certified, they borrow practices from permaculture and biodynamics in their vineyards.
Winemaking Notes: Grapes are manually harvested and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. After a few months of aging, the wine is bottled with very minimal amounts of added sulfites.
