Gordo Monastrell is a tribute to the Mata family’s deep winemaking heritage and, most personally, to Patrick Mata’s father. "Gordo" is Patrick’s affectionate term for his father, José Mata.
The Mata family produced wine for nearly four generations across Málaga, Montilla, Sanlúcar, Rioja, and other Spanish regions. Their wines were exported internationally both before and after Prohibition. However, by the 1960s, demand for Málaga wines declined dramatically, and the family winery ultimately closed in 1972. Today, Patrick in partnership with Alberto Orte honors that legacy through Vinos Atlántico, producing terroir-driven wines from distinctive regions throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
Gordo is made from organically grown, dry farmed Monastrell planted in Yecla in 1970. The vineyard has poor, rocky soil that naturally limits yields, producing smaller berries with a higher skin-to-juice ratio. The resulting wine is one of concentration and complexity
The Label: Dry-Farmed Vines
Gordo’s icon honors the tradition of dry farming, a practice central to many of Europe’s most historic vineyards. Without irrigation, vines are forced to send roots deep into the soil in search of water and nutrients. These deep root systems promote resilience, especially in drought years, and encourage steady, balanced ripening.
