Esopus Spitzenburg was first discovered in the early 18th century near Esopus, New York. It was a favorite apple of Thomas Jefferson, who planted several trees at Monticello's south orchard. It is a difficult tree to grow but is well worth the effort because of its unique flavor, making it one of the most prized American heritage apple varieties. Reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc, enjoy notes of passion fruit, grapefruit, green apple, and lemon grass.
