About Mavrotragano: Mavrotragano is a red grape variety indigenous to the island of Santorini but rapidly gaining recognition around Greece. Mavrotragano is an enigma. To begin, it is a thick-skinned and tough grape that creates full-bodied and tannic wines; the complete opposite of the light, easy-drinking red wine one might expect to find on an island. However, eking out life on a volcanic island is tough, which also makes for tenacious vines and powerful wines. Additionally, there’s a lack of typicity among the wines made with it; it is very much at the mercy of the winemaker.

Winemaking Notes: Grapes are manually harvested from estate vineyards in Vourvoulos, Megalochori and Akrotiri. Whole cluster maceration and fermentation with indigenous yeast lasts around 20 days followed by 12 months in a mix of American and French oak barrels to help round out the tannins.

Tasting Notes: The Vassaltis Mavrotragano is a rich and complex wine with ripe red fruit, cherry, plum, black currant, hints of minerality and black tea. The medium body has structured tannins and balanced acidity. Enjoy this red wine with game, veal, lamb, beef and hearty stews.
