Vineyard Notes: Island View is one of Left Foot Charley's oldest and most prized vineyards. It is owned and farmed by the Kuehnis family. The vines are hand thinned 6 times throughout the growing season to ensure that every cluster gets the proper amount of sunlight and every shoot is carefully positioned so that the leaves can receive the maximum amount of light as well. The fruit is manually harvested by friends and family in a joyous celebration of wine, work, and food. The vines release a wonderful aromatic presence of fresh apples and pears.
At Left Foot Charley, grower Werner Kuehnis has been a profound source of inspiration—shaping the winery’s philosophy of care, precision, and respect for the vineyard. A retired mechanical engineer from Switzerland, Werner moved to Old Mission Peninsula with his wife Margrit and purchased a home with an acre of the oldest Pinot Blanc vines in Michigan. He turned to winemaker Bryan Ulbrich for advice, and soon became a self-taught, meticulous grower. Over time, Werner developed an intimate relationship with all 1,100 of his vines, mastering the nuances of the site and consistently producing some of the finest fruit in the region. His commitment to quality and hands-on farming continues to influence the spirit of Left Foot Charley today.
