Moinoterra is based in Archanes, just south of Heraklion and in the shadow of Mount Giouchtas, in one of Crete’s oldest and most important wine-growing areas. The family sees the project as a continuation of the region’s ancient wine culture rather than a reinvention of it. Archaeological work around Archanes has documented winemaking here going back roughly 3,700 years, including a Minoan wine press and large storage vessels dating to the 16th century BC.

Today, Moinoterra works to bring that history into the present through modern vineyard practices and a strong focus on Crete’s indigenous grapes. The name itself is a mash-up of Minos and oinos—wine—and the winery’s philosophy is essentially about picking up a very old thread and seeing where it can go. Their vineyards around Archanes sit at elevation and benefit from the area’s rolling hills and mountain influence.

The approach is straightforward: respect the vineyards, work with experienced local people, and make wines that actually taste like Crete. There’s plenty of ancient-history baggage that can come with Cretan wine, but Moinoterra is less interested in making museum pieces than in showing what the region’s native varieties and vineyards can do today.
