Domaine Nerantzi is a small organic estate in northern Greece, near the border of Macedonia and Thrace, with 15 hectares of vines in the foothills of Mount Menoikio. The Mitropoulos family has deep agricultural roots, and Nerantzi Mitropoulos has spent much of his career looking beyond the obvious varieties in search of the grapes that once belonged to this part of Greece. The vineyards sit at around 300 meters on moderately calcareous sandy-loam soils, with an unusual bonus buried in the hilltop: layers of ancient pottery scattered through the vineyard, a pretty literal piece of Greek history under the vines.

Nerantzi’s obsession with local varieties led him in 1998 to a nearly forgotten grape called Koniaros. The variety had survived locally but had been largely abandoned because of its low yields and lack of vigor. After tracking down an old academic reference and having the vines DNA tested in France, Nerantzi confirmed Koniaros as a distinct Greek variety and helped get it officially recognized. It is now one of the estate’s signature grapes.

Today, Nerantzi works alongside his daughter Eva, who studied oenology in Dijon, combining that technical background with a distinctly local approach. Fermentations are spontaneous using native vineyard yeasts, and the winery even uses locally sourced Balkan oak for some of its aging. The philosophy is pretty simple: keep the grapes, wood, yeast and farming as close to home as possible and let the wines tell the story of a part of Greece that most of the wine world has yet to discover.
