The Tatsis family has been growing grapes and making wine for generations. Their grandparents came to Greece from Ano Vodeno in Eastern Rumelia during the population exchanges of 1924 and settled in Goumenissa, a region whose vineyards reminded them of home. Brothers Periklis and Stergios took over the family estate from their father, making their first vintage in 1996. What began as four hectares has grown to 14, with Periklis focused on the vineyards and Stergios in the cellar.
Tatsis was making natural wine in Greece before natural wine was a thing in Greece. Their wines are certified organic, with biodynamic practices, native fermentations and very little interest in following whatever style happens to be fashionable. Xinomavro is at the center of the estate, along with the other indigenous varieties of Goumenissa. The brothers work organically in the vineyard and are just as willing to experiment in the cellar, including extended maceration for white grapes and long aging for rosé.
There is a stubbornly independent streak to Tatsis. They release their Goumenissa only after substantial bottle aging and make wines that are traditional in their connection to the region but decidedly unconventional in how they are made. They were among the early Greek producers to take low intervention winemaking seriously, and after all these years they still seem more interested in following their own instincts than keeping up with the neighbors.
