Artemis Karamolegos Winery is a family estate rooted in Santorini’s winemaking tradition. The family has been cultivating Assyrtiko on the island since the 1950s, and Artemis established the winery in Exo Gonia in 2003. Today, the estate works primarily with old-vine Assyrtiko, much of it more than 100 years old and trained in the traditional kouloura system, with a focus on low yields and preserving the character of Santorini’s volcanic soils.
Assyrtiko is the clear focus, but the goal is to show just how much range the variety has. Artemis makes everything from the classic Santorini and Nykteri to the more serious 34 and Pyritis bottlings, along with limited-production wines from individual vineyards in Pyrgos, Fira, Akrotiri and Megalochori. The winery also makes Mystirio, a skin-contact Assyrtiko from 150-year-old vines, as well as Vinsanto and wines from other native varieties including Aidani and Mavrotragano.
> The winemaking combines traditional techniques with a willingness to experiment, using stainless steel, concrete, clay and oak, with extended lees aging and careful cellar time before release. The result is a range that moves well beyond the standard Santorini profile, showing Assyrtiko in different textures and levels of power while keeping the island’s signature acidity, salinity and volcanic character front and center.
