Stakhovsky Wines is the personal project of Sergiy Stakhovsky, a former professional tennis player best known for his landmark victory over Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013. Launched with the 2018 vintage, the winery reflects Stakhovsky’s ambition to demonstrate the quality and potential of Ukrainian wine on both a domestic and international stage.

Stakhovsky’s passion for wine developed during his time in Bordeaux, where he played tennis at Villa Primrose and gained exposure to the region’s winemaking culture. That influence remains evident today, as he brings a Bordeaux-inspired mindset to his winery in Zakarpattia while focusing on expressing the unique identity of his home terroir.

Stakhovsky farms 22 hectares of vineyards near the village of Muzhijevo (Muzhievo) in western Ukraine. The vineyards lie at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, close to the borders of Hungary and Slovakia. This historic region has viticultural roots dating back more than 2,000 years, predating the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It benefits from a protective mountain barrier that shields it from cold air masses, while the Pannonian Plain brings warm influences from the west.

The vineyards are planted on southwest-facing slopes at elevations between 100 and 200 meters, with well-draining soils composed predominantly of limestone, along with loam and volcanic clay. Combined with moderate rainfall and ample sun exposure, these conditions yield balanced wines with freshness, structure, and mineral character. Varieties include Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Saperavi, Zweigelt, and Rose Traminer, with future plantings planned for Furmint and Pinot Noir.

Farming is carried out with a focus on sustainability and vineyard health. In the cellar, Stakhovsky employs a combination of modern technology sourced from Italy and Germany, alongside aging in French oak barrels, aiming for precision and clarity in the finished wines.

Stakhovsky Wines is as much a cultural project as it is an agricultural one—bringing together sport, art, and winemaking. Longtime friend and creative collaborator Alexis Atteret, grandson of the founder of Bordeaux’s CVBG (one of the largest wine trading houses in the region), contributes to the visual identity of the wines, designing the labels for the ACE and W by Stakhovsky series.
