Barolo is evolving, with more producers focusing on thoughtful farming and a lighter touch in the cellar. But wines with real soul—the kind that linger with you—are still rare.
Elio Sandri delivers exactly that.
Working his family’s small estate in Monforte d’Alba since 1981, Elio produces Nebbiolo that feels completely natural and unforced. His wines don’t try to tame the grape’s structure—they embrace it, resulting in Barolo that is both powerful and beautifully balanced.
Cascina Disa sits tucked away in a quiet valley just outside the village of Perno, surrounded by forest and vineyards. Elio’s father bought the property in 1965, and Elio took over in the early ’80s, making his first vintage in 1981.
Today, the estate covers 7.5 hectares of vines, all in one contiguous stretch. The vineyards are planted across different exposures, with Nebbiolo getting the sunnier sites and smaller plantings of Dolcetto and Barbera in cooler spots. Some vines are as old as 60 years, adding depth and character to the wines.
In the vineyard, Elio keeps things simple. He avoids chemicals, works organically, and interferes as little as possible, trusting the land to find its natural balance. Because everything is close to the winery, he can harvest quickly and bring in fruit in great condition.
The same philosophy carries into the cellar. Fermentations happen naturally in cement tanks, and the wines age in large, old oak barrels. Nothing fancy, nothing forced—no fining, no filtration, and just a touch of sulfur before bottling.
