A Foundational Name in Traditional Barolo
Over the course of his remarkable 77-year career (1850–1927), Giovan Battista Burlotto achieved a level of international distinction rivaled only by Biondi-Santi and Vega Sicilia. At a time when French wines dominated the global stage, G.B. Burlotto emerged as one of Italy’s great wine pioneers, helping to define what Barolo could be both stylistically and culturally.
Founded in 1850 in Verduno, Burlotto was among the very first producers to bottle Barolo rather than selling it in cask or demijohn—predating even Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Monfortino. As official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy (which once ruled Piedmont), Burlotto not only achieved personal acclaim but also helped elevate Verduno to the same historical stature as Barolo’s most celebrated villages.
Today, Burlotto stands once again among Piedmont’s most revered small estates under the stewardship of Fabio Alessandria, G.B.’s great-great-grandson. Fabio’s work is defined by a rigorously traditional approach including long macerations in large, neutral vessels, and an unwavering commitment to purity of expression. As a new generation of wine lovers rediscovers the allure of traditional Barolo, Burlotto’s reputation has surged, reclaiming its place among the most sought-after names in the Langhe.
Monvigliero: Verduno's Most Singular Expression
As in G.B. Burlotto’s time, the estate’s most extraordinary wine is its Barolo from the legendary Monvigliero Vineyard. What sets Monvigliero apart is not its high altitude, limestone soils, or 45-year old vines, but its unmistakable and hypnotic aromatic profile—unlike any other Barolo. The wine is instantly recognizable, offering an astonishing perfume of Provençal black olive tapenade, cedar, and truffle. Ethereal yet deeply expressive, Monvigliero is a wine that could come from nowhere else on earth.
While Monvigliero remains the crown jewel, all of Fabio Alessandria’s Barolos share the same hallmarks: pristine aromatics, haunting finesse, and a surreal sense of texture. Each site speaks with a unique voice, yet all are united by Fabio’s unwavering commitment to traditional Barolo and site transparency. In recent vintages, the Barolo lineup has included five distinct expressions: Monvigliero, Cannubi, Acclivi (a blend of Burlotto’s Verduno crus), Barolo (classico/normale), Castelletto (added in 2018 following the acquisition of just over one hectare).
Aside from its renowned Baroli, G.B. Burlotto also deserves enormous credit for preserving the once-endangered Pelaverga grape.
