Nicolas Carlin didn’t come from wine. He grew up in Paris and studied software, but his heart was always in the Loire. His family had a house in Crezancy-en-Sancerre, and every summer he'd escape the city to intern in the vines with family friends, eventually landing at Domaine de la Voltonnerie, run by Jack Pinson—who just so happened to be his future father-in-law. That connection led him to leave tech behind and study enology in Beaune. Not long after, he joined the cellar full time.
Voltonnerie itself started small, just 1 hectare back in 1970. Today it’s grown to 16 hectares on the clay-limestone slopes just southwest of the village of Sancerre: 12.5 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir. Nicolas and his wife Alix (Jack’s daughter) officially took over in 2010.
The following year, Nicolas launched Manoline, a personal project named after their daughters, Manon and Caroline. The handprints on the label are more than cute branding—they reflect the mix of Paris and Sancerre, family and farming, and the balance and intention that Nicolas brings to the wines. Manoline is about making Sancerre with heart, by hand, and with a sense of place.
