Weingut Von Hövel has been making wine at the Saar since 1803, when Emmerich Grach acquired the former St. Maximin monastery estate in Oberemmel. Today, the seventh generation farms 22 hectares across some of the Saar’s most important sites, with Riesling at the center. The estate’s holdings include 2.85 hectares of the Scharzhofberg and the 5.8 hectare Oberemmeler Hütte, a monopole that has been part of the estate since its beginning. The vineyards are steep and cool, with blue, gray and red Devonian slate, quartzite and iron rich deposits.
Von Hövel works with the traditional range of Saar Riesling styles, from dry through feinherb and feinfruchtig. The wines are hand harvested and fermented spontaneously, then raised in traditional Mosel Fuder and left on their full lees for extended periods. The estate also holds Fair’n Green certification and works with minimal cellar intervention, no fining and only the sulfur needed to stabilize the wines. The emphasis is on the cool climate, slate soils and long growing season of the Saar, with the wines built for freshness, moderate alcohol and long aging.
