Joachim Heger has spent nearly 40 vintages proving that the Kaiserstuhl can produce some seriously great Pinot Noir. His family has been making wine in Ihringen since 1935, when his grandfather, Dr. Max Heger, founded the estate after acquiring vineyards in the Ihringer Winklerberg and Achkarrer Schlossberg, two of the region’s best sites. Joachim took over the cellar in 1981 and has since built the estate around these steep, sun drenched volcanic slopes, working primarily with Spätburgunder, along with Riesling, Silvaner and the Pinot varieties. Today, Heger’s wines are reference points for Baden, combining the ripeness of one of Germany’s warmest wine regions with the structure and site character you expect from serious Pinot.

The Kaiserstuhl is an extinct volcanic massif rising above the Rhine Valley, with a complicated mix of volcanic rock, limestone and deep loess soils. Heger farms parcels within the historic boundaries of the Winklerberg, including old vines planted from massal selections, and has farmed without herbicides or pesticides since 2007. Cover crops, organic treatments and even horse plowing are part of the program. In the cellar, Joachim is less interested in chasing a house style than in letting the vineyards do the talking. His Pinot Noir is built around freshness, texture and clarity, while old vine Silvaner and the estate’s Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder show just how far the Kaiserstuhl’s Pinot family can go.
