Johannes Leitz took over his family estate in Rüdesheim in 1985 with just 2.9 hectares and has since built it into one of the Rheingau’s leading producers, now farming around 90 hectares across the region, including 18 hectares of steep vineyards in the Rüdesheimer Berg. Riesling accounts for about 85 percent of the plantings, with the great sites of Schlossberg, Rottland, Roseneck and Kaisersteinfels, producing some of the estate’s most serious dry wines. Their flagship Dragonstone Riesling comes from the single vineyard Drachenstein. Leitz farms these vineyards with a strong focus on biodiversity and preserving the historic steep slope terraces.
Leitz is also a category leader in low and no alcohol wine, making dealcoholized wine a meaningful part of the estate rather than a side project. The EINS ZWEI ZERO range, at less than 0.05% ABV, and ZERO POINT FIVE, at 0.5% ABV, are made from wine produced with the same attention to vineyard quality as the estate wines, then gently dealcoholized under vacuum to preserve aroma and freshness. It is a serious part of the business and a natural extension of Leitz’s focus on Riesling and German wine.
