Porto dos Santos was originally founded in 1836 by Joaquim Ferreira Pinto and established a reputation for producing high-quality Port wines for the Portuguese and Brazilian markets. In the early 20th century, the brand and its extensive stocks of Port were sold to another Port house, and the name gradually disappeared from the market.

In 2022, Alexandre Botelho, a descendant of the founding family, revived Porto dos Santos with a vision rooted in the traditions of the Douro Valley. Working closely with small growers throughout the region, the winery seeks to celebrate the artisanal production of Port while honoring the land, people, and heritage that define the category.

A distinguishing feature of Porto dos Santos is its extended fermentation process. Fermentation is allowed to continue longer than is customary for Port production, resulting in wines with significantly lower residual sugar. This approach produces a drier style of Port that retains remarkable richness while emphasizing freshness, aromatic complexity, and elegance.

The Douro Valley is one of the world's great wine regions, defined by steep terraced vineyards planted on schist soils. This slate-like metamorphic rock is rich in minerals and possesses excellent water retention properties, allowing vines to survive the region's hot, dry conditions while naturally limiting yields. The combination of schist soils, low rainfall, and traditional thick-skinned grape varieties produces fruit of exceptional concentration and character. These challenging growing conditions contribute to the depth, structure, and complexity that have made Ports renowned around the world.
