Barrett & Barrett 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, Calistoga, Napa Valley Login WA 94 JS 93 JD 97 In Stock

Barrett & Barrett is the culmination of two of Napa Valley’s most respected winemakers, Heidi Peterson Barrett and Bo Barrett. Married for over 35 years, the pair launched this collaboration in 2008 to craft a singular Cabernet Sauvignon from their family’s estate vineyards in Calistoga. With deep roots in the region and complementary winemaking philosophies, Barrett & Barrett is a union of world-class viticulture and visionary craftsmanship.

Heidi Barrett résumé includes some of Napa’s most iconic wines. She was the original winemaker behind Screaming Eagle (1992–2006), and her client list includes a who’s who of cult and collector labels such as Dalla Valle, Grace Family, Amuse Bouche, Fantesca, Paradigm, and her own brand, La Sirena. Known for her elegant, balanced, and ageworthy Cabernets, Heidi has helped define the style and standard for Napa’s finest wines.

Bo Barrett carries a legacy of his own. He has helmed the cellar at Chateau Montelena since 1982, guiding the estate’s classically styled wines to global acclaim. His work has helped solidify Montelena’s reputation for terroir-driven, European-inspired bottlings. He played a key role in the establishment of the Calistoga AVA and is widely regarded for his expertise in vineyard development and site expression.

Together, Heidi and Bo bring both precision and passion to their collaborative project. The original vineyard block was planted in 1989 on steep volcanic slopes at the base of Mt. St. Helena, producing tiny, intensely flavored berries. A second vineyard block sits on gravelly alluvial soils at the confluence of Garnet and Jericho creeks. These low-yielding sites benefit from ideal southwestern exposure, allowing the grapes to ripen fully each year and resulting in concentrated, expressive Cabernet Sauvignon.

Beyond the vineyard, Barrett & Barrett reflects the couple’s shared worldview and reverence for the natural elements that shape great wine. The land represents the soil beneath the vines, the sea symbolizes the water that sustains them, and the sky is the ever-changing climate that shapes each vintage. Their label artwork—a winged hippocampus (seahorse) inspired by ancient coinage—evokes the harmony of these forces and the antiquity of winemaking itself.

Barrett & Barrett Cabernet Sauvignon is a focused and deeply personal expression of place and partnership. It is a wine shaped by decades of experience, grounded in family, and brought to life by two of Napa’s most influential winemakers.

After swooning over the 2018 version, I was entirely prepared to fall in love with the Barretts's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon. Scents of loamy earth, vanilla and black cherries appear on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is supple, almost creamy, then rich, long and velvety on the finish. Somehow, it wasn't as exciting as I was anticipating, but that's what happens sometimes when expectations are high. It's still an excellent wine I'd be very happy to drink.

Aromas of ripe dark berries, spiced cedar, ground spices, sea shell and cigar box. Full and creamy with velvety tannin structure and succulent dark fruit in the middle. Lingering finish

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon brings a touch more intensity, with beautiful black fruits, black olive, iron, and cedar pencil aromatics. It's concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and has riveting purity and precision, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. It's one seriously brilliant Cabernet Sauvignon that readers can drink today or cellar for 2+ decades.
