Calma is the expression of a singular place in Rioja Alta, crafted by winemaker Alberto Orte. Known for reviving forgotten techniques and championing distinctive sites, Alberto is driven by wines that speak clearly of time and place. With Calma, his focus is firmly on terroir.
The wine comes from Viña Badrinal, a high altitude vineyard in the village of Hormilla near the Sierra de la Demanda mountain range. Planted at nearly 2,000 feet above sea level, the site sits on sandy limestone and clay soils, a combination that yields tension and depth. The elevation preserves freshness and bright acidity.
Viña Badrinal is organically farmed and manually harvested. Produced in small quantities, this single vineyard Rioja is a focused study of site. The fruit from Viña Badrinal delivers natural concentration, beautifully integrated tannins, and balancing acidity, giving the wine both elegance and excellent aging potential.
The Label: The Harvest Knife
The harvest knife icon honors the craft of manual harvesting. Hand harvesting allows for careful selection of the healthiest clusters, preserving fruit integrity and ensuring quality from the very first step in the winemaking process. In an era when mechanical harvesting is common, the knife represents intention, tradition, and respect for the vineyard.
