Cantine Volpi traces its roots to 1914, when Cristina Volpi and her two sons purchased the historic tavern "Il Cappel Verde" in the center of Tortona and began selling wine by the glass. Benefiting from Tortona’s strategic location between Milan, Genoa, and the surrounding agricultural countryside, the family soon expanded beyond the local market. By the 1930s, their wines, particularly Barbera from the Colli Tortonesi, were being traded throughout northern Italy.
The company’s evolution from wine merchant to producer began in 1957 with the construction of a winery in Viguzzolo dedicated to vinifying local grapes. A second, more modern facility followed in Tortona in 1962, focused on aging and bottling. Through careful grape selection, estate vinification, and a commitment to quality, Cantine Volpi became one of the leading wineries of the Colli Tortonesi. In the 1970s, it was among the first producers in the area to bottle wines under the newly established DOC regulations, helping define the region’s reputation for quality.
Today, Cantine Volpi is led by the fourth and fifth generations of the Volpi family, including Carlo, Laura, and Marco Volpi. Carlo joined the winery in 1975 and played a key role in expanding export markets and championing organic production long before it became commonplace. He contributed to the success of the Cortese Frizzante in the 1980s. Under his leadership, the winery strengthened its position as a benchmark producer in the Tortona Hills while maintaining a deep connection to its agricultural roots.
In 2019, the family consolidated all production activities into a state-of-the-art winery in Tortona, bringing grape processing, vinification, aging, and bottling under one roof. The commitment to hospitality followed in 2022 with the restoration of part of the family’s La Zerba farmhouse in Volpedo, creating a tasting room surrounded by Timorasso and Barbera vineyards.
Cantine Volpi produces a broad range of classic Piedmontese wines. Great care is given to each variety, allowing the distinctive character of the subregion and its grapes to shine through.
