Ludovicus 2021 Garnacha, Terra Alta DO (VR) Login In Stock

Ludovicus Garnacha is a mineral-driven, spice-laced Mediterranean red that consistently drinks well beyond its price point. It showcases an effortless balance of power and finesse. Sourced from high elevation vineyards (1,427 feet) in Terra Alta, this Garnacha is shaped by altitude, old vines, and limestone-rich soils, which lend both concentration and lift to the wine.

Terra Alta, in northeastern Spain, carries a winemaking history that dates back to Roman times (2nd–3rd century). The vineyards for Ludovicus lie near the town of Batea, southwest of Priorat in the rugged mountains of Tarragona. Though often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Terra Alta has long been one of Spain’s great Garnacha strongholds.

Here, elevation is everything. The vineyards sit high above the coastal plain, where warm days are tempered by cooling winds. The soils are strikingly calcareous, approximately 95% limestone with a small percentage of clay, lending the wine its hallmark tension and minerality. The region consists of old vines which produce wines with natural concentration, bright acidity, and savory depth.

The Label: La Masía
The Ludovicus icon pays tribute to La Masía — the humble stone shelter found in Catalan vineyards. Traditionally a gathering place for farmers to rest and share meals during the workday, La Masía represents community, sustenance, and the rhythms of agricultural life. It is a home away from home in the vines, a symbol of both labor and togetherness — values that remain central to the culture of Terra Alta today.
