Southern Portugal’s Alentejo region is renowned for its arid Climate. It is a landscape defined by vast horizons, cork forests, olive groves, and old vines rooted in sunbaked soils. Within this rugged terrain lies the municipality of Mourão, a historically agrarian area that remained largely untouched by modern infrastructure until the early 21st century.
In 2004, the completion of the Alqueva Dam, the “Barragem de Alqueva” now Europe’s largest artificial lake, dramatically reshaped the region. Built to serve as a critical water reservoir and irrigation source for much of Alentejo, the dam permanently submerged the original village of Aldeia da Luz.
Rather than dispersing its residents, a remarkable resettlement plan was undertaken. After extensive consultation with the villagers, Aldeia da Luz was rebuilt a few kilometers away on higher ground. Alongside the new village, 200 hectares of olive groves and 83 hectares of vineyards were planted — land that is now owned and cultivated collectively by the village’s 74 permanent residents.
Aplanta sources its fruit from these vineyards, capturing both the resilience of the community and the warmth of the Alentejo landscape. The wine reflects the region’s signature character: ripe, sun-kissed fruit, supple texture, and an easygoing, generous style balanced by rustic charm.
The Label: The Cork Oak
Aplanta’s icon pays tribute to the cork oak, one of Alentejo’s most iconic trees and a pillar of Portugal’s agricultural heritage. Vast montado forests of cork trees define the region, and Portugal remains the world’s leading producer of natural cork.
