Tasting Notes: Rossa Sicily Amara is a distinctive Sicilian liqueur crafted from blood oranges grown in the fertile plains of Catania, just south of Mount Etna. The name Amara, meaning “bitter” in Italian and expressed in its feminine form, reflects the liqueur’s elegant and softer take on the traditional amaro style.
As one might expect, the primary flavor is the rich, zesty character of Sicilian blood orange, supported by layers of Mediterranean herbs such as marjoram and oregano. These herbal undertones lend a subtle salinity and depth, while the natural sweetness of the orange is gently balanced by a mild bitterness. On the palate, Amara is persistent and expressive, with a complex mix of candied orange, licorice, clove, rhubarb, and black elderberry, finishing with a lingering aroma of pure citrus.
Production Notes: Amara is produced in small batches using a simple, tradition-driven process. Blood oranges are hand-picked in January and meticulously peeled by hand. The fragrant peels are infused in pure grain alcohol over multiple rounds to maximize flavor extraction and color.
A separate infusion of wild herbs—many foraged from the slopes of Mount Etna—is prepared and then blended with the orange infusion. The final liqueur is sweetened with cane sugar and diluted with pure Etna spring water before bottling. The result is a clean, naturally balanced amaro free from artificial additives or preservatives.
Amara Cocktails
Unlike many traditional amari, Amara is softer and more approachable, making it ideal as both a digestivo and a cocktail component. Add soda or tonic for a refreshing spritz, pour it over ice, or mix it into classics like the Negroni. Whether sipped neat after a meal or mixed into your favorite cocktail, Amara offers a refined yet powerful expression of Sicily’s iconic blood oranges.
