Vineyard Notes: Pétalos Mencía is sourced from over 90 hectares of vineyards in Bierzo. 20% comes from estate fruit in and around the village of Corullón. The rest is purchased from 180+ families with whom they have a long-term relationship. The portion of purchased fruit for Petalos is either farmed organically, or is in conversion to organic viticulture. The vines range in age from 40 to 90 years old and are planted at varying elevation and varying slope. There are 3% of white grapes in the blend and 5% of red grapes other than Mencía (Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne and Negreda).

Winemaking Notes: The wine is vinified for immediate appeal, but it retains the estate's signature finesse and restraint. The vineyards are worked by hand and harvested by hand. The grapes were partly destemmed and fermented in open-top stainless steel and oak vats with long maceration where the wine underwent a slow malolactic (around 2-3 months). It matured in barrel before being bottled without filtration or fining.

Reviews

  • The Wine Spectator
    Rating: 92 (10/15/2023)

A bright, harmonious red, with savory notes of mineral and cigar box leading to flavors of black raspberry, black olive and milled pepper.

  • The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 93+ (8/10/2023)

2021 is clearly the finest vintage of the trio of 2020, 2021 and 2022, and the bottled 2021 Pétalos delivers what the unbottled samples promised: a wine with lower alcohol than ever (13.5%), lighter, a little narrower but with the juiciness of Mencía that seems to come back after some time in bottle. It has lots of notes of aromatic herbs, with some similar aromas to the La Faraona. It's quite expressive and showy, very pleasant and easy to drink, very gourmand, with a velvety mouthfeel and very fine tannins. 320,000 bottles and 2,567 magnums produced. It was bottled between November 2022 and March 2023. Approachable now, very hedonistic.
