Always one of our most distinct and long-lived field-blends, the 2021 Nervo Ranch is a beauty. From vines planted in 1896 on 30+ degree slopes of decomposed shale just south of the town of Geyserville, the vineyard is one of the most unique field blends that we work with. Though there are three blocks with old vines on the ranch, each with its own mix of varieties, crop was so low in 2021 that we chose to co-ferment all three. The result is a wine of great aromatic complexity with plenty of white pepper and black raspberry along with lots of density and tension. At pick-up last year, I poured the 2015 of this wine from the library and it was just starting to come into its own—much like the great vintages of Old Hill, Bedrock, and Oakville Farmhouse, one should expect this to age gracefully for many years.

"A complex, intriguing field blend, the 2021 Nervo Heritage Wine is laced with dried autumn leaves, dried flowers, mint, tobacco and cedar. The Nervo is distinctive not just for its age (it was planted in 1896) for the presence of the rarely-seen Negrette as the second most prominent variety in the Zinfandel-based field blend. Readers will find a wine with strong earthy, spice and leafy notes that are pushed forward, while the fruit is more in the background." - Antonio Galloni, 94 points
