Winemaking Notes: No chemical treatments are ever employed in the vineyards. The hand-harvested, carefully sorted fruit ferments spontaneously in large cement tanks, with a lengthy three-to-four-week period of maceration. Malolactic fermentation takes place in steel. Aging occurs for 24 months in gargantuan, ladder-requiring old casks, mainly Slavonian with some French, and bottling is done without fining or filtration.

Vineyard Notes: Brovia owns a hectare and a half of old vines (planted in 1961) situated at 340 meters altitude in this characterful southwest-facing cru in Castiglione Falletto.

Tasting Notes: Villero’s clay-limestone marl (though still containing some sand) renders a wine of notable structure—one which often assumes a dark, brooding personality in its youth. It matures into a regal wine of exceptional depth; it is the quintessential Barolo.

The 2018 Barolo Villero is laser sharp and etched with ferrous mineral notes next to wild berry, cherry, cola, campfire ash and grilled rosemary. This elegant, mid-weight wine shows a very long finish and should not disappoint on the cellar-aging front. It should hold well past the 20-year mark.
