Tasting Notes: Aged exclusively in concrete tanks rather than oak barrels, the flavors and structure of this wine come purely from the Syrah and Grenache plants themselves. The chalky tannins that come on strong, and then melt away on the finish, make it a perfect pairing to almost any meal. Intermingled savory and fruit flavors underscore the complexity that will only increase in time. Thai basil, blood orange peel, ginger, blueberry and white pepper only scratch the surface. Drink now through 2026 with a decant for fresher fruit notes, or 2027 through 2034 for a softer pallet and more developed flavors like leather and dried pomegranate.

Pairings: Seared tuna, wild boar ragu, wild roasted mushroom risotto, soft cheeses like Pouligny-Saint-Pierre (goat) or Brillat-Savarin (cow)

Viticulture Notes: The vineyards are farmed organically with some biodynamic practices. Currently (as of 2017) about 80% of Linne Calodo's wines are made from estate fruit. Sulfur is sprayed to protect against mildew. Irrigation is limited and mainly used to help the young vines stay healthy. The crop loads reflect the natural balance of the vine. The grapes are harvested at the peak of ripeness to produce wines that are rich and concentrated.

Appellation: Willow Creek District, Paso Robles
Fermentation: Native yeast fermentation, closed top 4-ton concrete fermenters, punch downs, pump overs and delestage (rack and return) by hand, basket pressed
Aging: Aged around 17 months in concrete tank

Filtering: Minimal

About the Name: This wine is about Matt's pursuit of perfection, knowing all along that it is not attainable yet trying anyways.

The 2018 Perfectionist is mostly Syrah yet has 38% Grenache, all co-fermented with plenty of whole clusters and aged 20 months in concrete tanks. Medium to full-bodied, rich, and concentrated, it has beautiful aromatics of red fruits, white pepper, herbes de Provence, and cedarwood. As is common with many of Matt’s wines, there’s a touch of spritz that always makes me scratch my head trying to figure out if its trapped CO2 or something else going on. Regardless, it blows off with air, and this is a beautiful, complex red that should keep for a decade. Give it a decant if drinking any time soon.
