Vineyard Notes: Fruit is harvested by hand in early October from 20-year-old vines trained in Guyot. The vineyard's sandy gravel provides excellent drainage while the clay in the subsoil provides moisture to the vines deep roots. Vineyards are cultivated without the use of chemical herbicides and are tightly spaced. The close spacing results in higher density per hectare (9,500 plants/ha), but lower yield per vine, guaranteeing greater richness of polyphenols in the ripe grapes. A strict triage is done in the vineyard so that only healthy, ripe grapes are selected and sent for vinification.
Winemaking Notes: Local traditions are lovingly followed at Moulin de Tricot. The grapes are destemmed before being softly crushed and racked into the tanks for fermentation. Bruno Rey vinifies his wines with traditional methods using modern equipment. He has chosen to use stainless steel tanks for fermentation as they allow him to control the temperature more precisely, when necessary. After fermentation, the wine is pressed and then returned to the stainless steel tanks for spontaneous malolactic fermentation. Following the malolactic, the wine is then racked into neutral French oak barrels where it matures for 12 months. The wine is racked off its lees every 6 months. An egg white fining and a minimal addition of SO2 are the only treatments the wine receives prior to being blended for final bottling.
Tasting Notes: This Haut Médoc combines the sturdy tannic structure intrinsic to the wines of the Médoc tied to black currant and plum fruit, all supported by acidity rarely found in modern Bordeaux. This wine can be enjoyed both in its youth and with bottle age.
