Vineyard Notes: This 100% Montepulciano wine is sourced from a single vineyard called Le Coste. Located 820 feet above sea level, single curtain trained vines are planted 4,000-4,500 per hectare. Fruit is harvested by hand during the later half of October.
Winemaking Notes: The destemmed Montepulciano grapes macerate on the skins for 8-9 days in a submerged, temperature controlled cap tank. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel. The wine is matured in Slavonian oak casks for 14-18 months and then aged in bottle for 6 months.
Tasting Notes: In the glass, the Le Coste Montepulciano is a deep shade of ruby. The bouquet is intense and complex, with a hint of ripe plum tending to jam. On the palate, the flavor is round and persistent, well-balanced and harmonic. Pair with salami, cheese, pasta with meat sauce and roasted red meat.
92+pts (2017) Vinous 10/6/2022
"The 2017 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva Vigna Le Coste bursts from the glass with a dusty mix of dried flowers, crushed raspberries, hints of menthol and allspice. This is elegant and polished in feel with velvety textures that are lifted by a core of vibrant acidity. Sour cherry fruits slowly saturate toward the close. The 2017 finishes with perfect balance, completely unexpected for the vintage, leaving fine tannins to mingle with nuances of cranberry and hard red candies. My hat is off to Barone Cornacchia for creating such a harmonious expression in such a torrid year. The Vigna Le Coste is also a perfect candidate for short-term cellaring."
