We love that Nebbiolo is not Nicoletta Bocca’s most famous wine! While Dolcetto rules the San Fereolo estate, we are offered a glimpse of how Nicoletta Bocca's style would translate to its northern Barolo neighbor through the Il Provinciale Langhe Nebbiolo. This wine is special and has several meanings. Named after her father, who was a WWII resistance fighter against fascism whose nickname was IL Provinciale, he enjoyed teasing Nicoletta remarking that her Dolcetto wines were "provincial." He would ask why she couldn't make an important or noble wine like Nebbiolo. When she finally did, she named it IL Provinciale, or the provincial one!
Vineyard Notes: Half of the fruit comes from a friend’s prime holding in the heart of Serralunga d’Alba, while the balance is sourced from an estate hillside parcel in Dogliani.
Winemaking Notes: The Nebbiolo fruit is manually harvested and taken to the cellar in twenty kilo boxes. It is pressed, de-stemmed and spontaneously vinified in large wooden vats with native yeast and a full 30-day maceration. After racking, the wine continues aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. The Nebbiolo ages on its fine lees, which for the first eight months these are kept in suspension thanks to batonnage in decreasing frequency. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously. The Nebbiolo naturally decants over time (2-3 years in large barrels) and is bottled without clarification or filtration. 2015 is the current release in 2020.
Tasting Notes: The long 30-day maceration in large vat allows for all of the character of the terroir to present itself, and the result is a wine of power and depth.
