Vintage Notes: The 2017 vintage offered excellent growing conditions. A very wet winter followed by a sunny spring started the year off right. The rest of the vintage would have been perfect if it not for a heat wave that struck in August. The vines shut down for a week and some fruit was long, but the remaining grapes benefitted from the smaller crop in terms of concentration.
Vineyard Notes: Sourced from vineyards in Mendocino County and Clarksburg.
Fermentation: 66% of the grapes were de-stemmed only and transferred by gravity to open-top fermenters, the other 33% was left whole cluster and added to the bottom of the tank. A long, cool 5 cold soak was allowed before the tank was taken off cooling. The must was then fermented with indigenous yeast to promote complexity and terroir. The fermented wine was pressed off slightly before dryness to minimize harsh phenols and retain it's core of fruit. Maloactic was completed with indigenous flora. Aged in new and neutral French oak barrels for 9 months, 30% new oak.
Tasting Notes: Bright, toasty oak and black fruit on the nose, the palate is silky with flavors of dark currant, roasted chestnut and bing cherry. Visually a lighter wine but the complete opposite in weight and texture. A testament to a phenomenal vintage!
