Favorite Food Pairings of 2009

RedEye's Alpana Singh discusses in the December 16 issue her favorite dishes of 2009. Her husband and her took it upon themselves to become chefs in 2009, planning out meals to enjoy with friends every week over the summer and fall, in order to imporve their cooking skills. Below is a list of her most memorable food and wine pairings (three of the wines in which Cream distributes).

1) Julia Child's beef bourguignon from "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone, France Julia's recipe elevates the humble beef stew to new heights. This rich, spicy and full-bodied red echoed the smoky bacon and red wine reduction in the sauce.

2) Thomas Keller's buttermilk fried chicken from the "Ad Hoc At Home" cookbook and Raventos i Blanc Brut Cava, Spain Fried chicken and sparkling wine is one of my all-time favorite pairings. The bubbles cut through the crunchy coating, providing a nice contrast.

3) David Chang's ramen from 'Momofuku" cookbook and Susana Balbo Crios Torrontes, Argentina Who knew ramen could be so delightfully fancy and elegant? The floral notes of the torrontes played like a gentle giant against the richness of the broth.

4) Pineapple upside down cake from "Betty Crocker's Cookbook" and Jorge Ordonez Seleccion Especial Malaga, Spain I usually like to have my dessert wines separate from the sweet treat, but this pairing was pineapple-flavored heaven.
