Vadio is a family winery founded in 2005 by husband-and-wife team Luís Patrão and Eduarda Dias. The estate is based in the village of Poutena, where their mission is to produce authentic DOC Bairrada wines that faithfully express the region's historic terroir and indigenous varieties.

The estate farms 10 hectares of vineyards divided among 27 small parcels, providing a diverse range of exposures, soils, and vine material. This mosaic of sites forms the foundation of Vadio's wines, which are rooted in a classic, transparent style that showcases the character of both the land and the traditional grape varieties of Bairrada. The winery itself is housed in a modest former warehouse in the center of the village, reflecting the simplicity, patience, and respect for tradition that define the project.

A native of Bairrada, Luís Patrão has become one of the region's leading voices for the Baga grape and traditional method sparkling wines. Alongside his work at Vadio, he serves as Director of Oenology at Tapada de Coelheiros and previously spent 13 years at Herdade do Esporão. His winemaking experience extends well beyond Portugal, with harvest and internship experience in California, Australia, Chile, and the Alentejo. Eduarda Dias, originally from Pernambuco, Brazil, oversees the daily operations of the family business, while Luís's father, Dinis Patrão, leads vineyard management and has become a passionate advocate for regenerative farming. His philosophy is simple: "A day without visiting the vineyard is not a good day."

The cornerstone of Vadio's work is a commitment to indigenous grape varieties. Baga serves as the foundation for the red wines, while Bical and Cercial are the primary white varieties. Influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, Bairrada's clay-limestone soils and moderate climate provide an ideal environment for these grapes, producing wines defined by freshness, structure, elegance, and exceptional aging potential.

In the cellar, Luís favors a minimalist approach designed to preserve the natural character of the fruit and the individuality of each vineyard site. Fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts, extraction is gentle, and intervention is kept to a minimum. Extended aging, often in neutral oak barrels, allows the wines to develop complexity and texture while maintaining purity and balance. The careful use of older wood contributes structure and refinement without overshadowing the fruit.

Vadio has also earned recognition for its sparkling wines. Luís was among the first producers in Bairrada to apply the solera method to the production of sparkling base wines, creating the acclaimed Vadio Perpétuum, now considered a benchmark for Portuguese sparkling wine.

Sustainability is central to every aspect of the estate. Certified organic vineyards are managed according to regenerative principles that prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and long-term ecosystem resilience. Cover crops, composting, and the preservation of natural habitats support a healthy vineyard environment, while drought-resistant rootstocks and dry farming practices help address water scarcity. Since 2015, Vadio has reduced its environmental footprint through lighter-weight bottles, eco-friendly packaging, and more efficient resource management.

Today, Vadio stands as one of Bairrada's most respected family estates, producing wines that honor the region's traditions while helping define its future. Through a commitment to native varieties, regenerative farming, and patient winemaking, Luís and Eduarda continue to demonstrate the remarkable potential of one of Portugal's most distinctive wine regions.
