Domaine Philippe Gilbert is one of the benchmark estates of Menetou-Salon, an appellation just west of Sancerre in France's Loire Valley. The estate traces its roots to 1768, when François Gilbert established the family domaine in the hamlet of Faucards. Today, it is led by Philippe Gilbert, who returned to his family's vineyards after a successful career as a playwright, dramaturg, and theater producer. Drawn back to the land cultivated by generations of his family, Philippe took over the estate as his father prepared to retire, ushering in a new era focused on terroir-driven and environmentally conscious viticulture.

The domaine encompasses approximately 30 hectares of vineyards spread across some of the appellation's finest sites in Menetou-Salon, Vignoux, Parassy, and Morogues. The vineyards are planted exclusively to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, the two varieties permitted within the appellation. Beneath the vines lies a classic mix of clay and limestone soils over Kimmeridgian marl, part of the same geological formation that extends through Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Chablis, and Champagne. Combined with the region's warm days and cool nights, these soils produce wines marked by precision, freshness, and pronounced mineral character.

Since Philippe's arrival, the estate has embraced a rigorous commitment to sustainable farming. Biodynamic practices were introduced across the vineyards in 2006, leading first to organic certification through Ecocert and subsequently to Biodyvin certification in 2007. These practices reflect a belief that great wines are born from healthy soils, balanced ecosystems, and a deep understanding of the vineyard.

All grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Sulfur additions are kept to a minimum, allowing the character of each vineyard and vintage to shine through. The resulting wines are marked by purity, energy, and a strong sense of place, offering a compelling reflection of Menetou-Salon's distinctive terroir and the Gilbert family's centuries-long connection to the land. Today, Domaine Philippe Gilbert is widely regarded as one of the leading estates of the appellation.
