Winemakers' Notes: “The Grist Carbonic Zinfandel is our quintessential gluggable red. You can't say Grist without saying complexity, so it certainly isn't lacking in that department, but there is an overwhelming feeling to wipe fresh sour cherry juice from your chin as you drink it. Plums and black raspberry also come to mind - sprinkled with a pinch or three of Diaspora's Aranya pepper.”

Winemaking Notes: Whole cluster grapes were gently loaded into an airtight stainless steel vessel upon arrival at the winery. Fruit was fermented fully carbonic with a daily dose of CO2 for 8 days, then foot trodden and allowed to rip through remaining primary fermentation on skins for 36 hours. The Zinfandel was then pressed into neutral wood barrels where, after a rack and return, it matured until bottling. Native primary and secondary ferments, unfined/unfiltered, and minimal So2 before bottling was the only addition.

Vineyard Notes: Grist Vineyard is located at the top of Bradford Mountain, which is the tallest crest of the coastal range along the border of Dry Creek Valley just west of Healdsburg in Sonoma County. It is located 15 miles east of the Pacific Ocean and in between is nothing but forested hills where countless mountain lions, wild boars and deer roam. The vineyard got its name from the old Grist Mill on the property. It has been certified organic since 2003 by the CCOF. The head-pruned vines sit in iron-rich, red volcanic soils that stress the vines into low yields and concentrated wines.
