Vintage Notes: Julien Sunier lost 50% of the crop because of mildew in 2021.

Lieux-Dits: Grapes were sourced from En Oeillat (1.10ha) , Les Forchets (0.34ha), and La Ronze (1.60ha). The average vine age is 60 years old. Organic agriculture has been in place for the totality of the domaine since its creation with six acres of vines certified Agriculture Biologique, 4 additional acres in organic conversion, and the remaining 10 acres left as meadow.

Winemaking Notes: The harvest is conducted entirely by hand. A careful selection is done in the vineyard, so that only the grape bunches which will go into the tank are returned to the winery. Each transport bin is large as well as shallow so that grapes are not crushed in transit. The whole grape clusters are loaded into the tanks by gravity and saturated with inert gas CO2 in order to begin the alcoholic fermentation in an anaerobic state. Once the tanks are full, a gentle foot crushing is applied with care to start the carbonic fermentation with indigenous yeast. After one to three weeks of fermentation at low temperatures, the grapes are manually removed from the tank, without the aid of pump, and the juice drains from the solids slowly, during 24 hours, in a vertical wooden basket press Julien acquired in the Côte d’Or. The wine matures for 8 months in 70% 15-20-year-old Burgundy barrels and 30% foudres. It is bottled unfiltered and with a small addition of sulfites.

About Régnié: From Vinepair : "Elevated in 1988, Régnié is the youngest of the Beaujolais crus, and stylistically, it brings together the fresh fruit of Brouilly with a bit of the body and structure of Morgon. It’s supple but lively, with bright raspberry flavors and often a spicy note that makes it distinctive."

The 2021 Régnié is Sunier's 15th vintage for Julien Sunier from 4 hectares, half on granite and half on alluvial soils. This is 100% carbonic maceration matured 30% in foudres and 70% in used 15-20-year-old barrels. It has a more tertiary aroma with touches of pressed flowers and a touch of wild mint. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, edgy and slightly chalky towards the finish that coheres beautifully in the glass.
