Since 1701, the Coste family has lived at Domaine Montrose in the Languedoc. Rosé is their emblematic wine. Cuvée 1701 is an exceptional rosé made from a rare blend of Grenache on volcanic terroir and Roussanne planted in the middle of the Mediterranean garrigue or wilderness. Cuvée 1701 was created to rival the world's greatest rosé wines.

Winemaking Notes: Cuvée 1701 is produced from their best vines from la Croix (the cross) plot. The Roussanne grapes are destemmed and undergo a short maceration before pressing. Free run juice is used from the red grapes. The fermentation is cold to enhance finesse. The white portion ages in new French oak barrels for five months. The red juice ages in stainless steel. The wines are blended and bottled at Domaine Montrose.

Tasting Notes: Cuvée 1701 has a nose of small red berries and fig. An elegant rosé, the wine has a brilliant personality and structure that is balanced by salinity and mineral freshness.

Farming Notes: Domaine Montrose is certified HVE 3 (Haute Valeur Environnementale level 3), which is the highest level of France's Environmental Value certification. It is a result of their efforts towards virtuous agriculture: planting 2,000 trees to preserve biodiversity, planting vineyard ground cover, pheromone dispensers, manual weeding, non-irrigated vines, etc. This certification complements their existing carbon neutral approach: to limit their impact on the planet, the Coste family has reduced their CO2 emissions to a minimum. They offset the rest by financing ecological initiatives.

90pts (2021 Vintage) Wine Advocate 8/11/2022
"It's not everyday a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Roussanne comes across the desk, but Domaine Montrose's 2021 IGP Cotes de Thongue Rose 1701 is a pale, coppery rosé that shows a bit more weight and texture than most of its peers. Subdued notes of honey, peach, strawberry and citrus appear on the nose, while the medium-bodied palate is round and ripe, yet retains great freshness and drive through the crisp finish."
