Terroir Notes: Rías Baixas is tucked into the green rolling hills of the northwest corner of Spain, just above Portugal, hugging the deep blue Atlantic coastline. It is a breathtaking region overall, and the subregion of Val do Salnes, the birthplace of Albariño, is no exception. Within the five unique subzones that fall under the D.O. Rías Baixas, Val do Salnes’ proximity to the Atlantic Ocean makes it the coolest and most fertile. It is only 5 meters above sea level. In fact, there are more Albariño vines planted in Val do Salnes than any of the other four subregions. The soil is pure granite with top layers of rocks and sand, which is perfect for the fresh, Albariño expression.

Tasting Notes: Leirana is a focused, mineral-driven Albariño featuring aromas and flavors of Meyer lemon, honeysuckle and sea spray. Its mouthwatering acidity, juicy stone fruit flavors, and pronounced salinity make it a beautiful wine pairing for oysters, clams and mussels. It is produced from vines planted between 1952 and 1982.

  • The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 94 (2/28/2022)

The vibrant 2020 Leirana was produced with a blend of 60% wine matured in used oak foudre and the rest stainless steel, as the wine has very high acidity (9 to 9.5 grams with a pH of 2.99!) and doesn't go through malolactic; so, it is very sharp, and the higher percentage of oak makes it a little rounder. It's powerful and pungent, serious and with granite minerality, showcasing the serious style of the whites from 2020. It has moderate alcohol (12.9%) and an electric palate that is clean and tasty, with a stony finish.
