Winemaker Notes from Shaunt & Diego: "We're very excited about the 2021 vintage of this wine. Having a bit more familiarity with the two vineyards (Venturi and Upton) and more moderate early harvest temperatures, we were able to nail the pick, and the wine is super fresh and aromatic, yet textural. 80% of the wine was direct press. This year we added 20% macerated Sauvignon Blanc to the blend, and we are incredibly excited by what this did to the overall complexity of the wine."

Vineyard Notes: The 2/3 of the grapes now come from the Venturi Vineyard's 1945 vines, and 1/3 of the grapes come from Upton Vineyard's 1950 vines planted in the Redwood Valley. Venturi Vineyard is located just north of Ukiah, in the Calpella Valley, on predominantly Pinole gravelly loam soils. Upton Vineyard is located in Redwood Valley and has similar soils, but the higher elevation and proximity to the mountains gives the region a slightly cooler climate.

Vinification Notes: Each vineyard was harvested separately and whole clusters were pressed directly. The juice was allowed to settle overnight and decanted off the grape solids. The juice fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. No sulfur or inoculation was made at this point and the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations were 100% indigenous. A portion of the Upton Sauvignon Blanc was fermented on the skins to add texture and depth. The wine was blended in January for a February bottling. It was bottled with no fining or filtration. Total SO2 equaled 15ppm.

Tasting Notes: The mouthfeel is characterized by laser-like acidity, while the aromas and flavors strike a balance between greenness and riper opulence, resulting in a style that is uniquely Californian. The old vines give this Sauvignon Blanc an additional dimension of depth and complexity. The minimalist approach in the cellar lends a wine that is highly drinkable and digestible.
