Vineyard Notes: Bedrock Vineyard is one of the most historically and qualitatively gilded plots of land in Sonoma Valley. Taking up 152 acres of the heart of Sonoma Valley, the vineyard occupies a large section of one of the best growing climates for grapes on earth. Though based around Zinfandel, the wine is a field blend of the 27 varieties found at the Bedrock Vineyard. Like the other great old vineyards with which Bedrock farms, the wine is far more defined by site than by variety.

"Over the past few years, we have taken over more and more of the old vines at Bedrock that were previously contracted to other wineries. This has given us more flexibility in assembling the blends and, frankly, has allowed us to better understand our own vineyard—from the subtle shadings imparted by the contours of soil to the different varietal blends in each block. We have learned that Blocks 39 and 42 lengthen the backbone of the wine, provide elegance and substantial structure while the shatter-prone Blocks 27 and 29, a mere 50 yards away, are darker and opulent with an almost licorice-tinged spiciness. The tiny Block 41, with only 390 vines, showcases the white pepper and flowers you might expect from an extremely varietally mixed block laced with a large amount of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Tempranillo. All of this means that we feel the Bedrock Heritage wine has ticked up a couple notches in the last few years and more and more truly represents all of the old vines at the vineyard." - Morgan

"The 2021 Bedrock Heritage Wine is a great expression of this site. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are front and center. This dark, virile Zinfandel-based field blend packs a serious punch. There's plenty of detail and nuance behind all of that intensity. The 2021 is a big wine, but also less monolithic than some previous editions. There's a bit more whole cluster in the 2021 than in the past, so perhaps that explains the wine's nuance. The 2021 is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from the Bedrock Vineyard..."

"Bold and brooding, this Zin-based red is a cornucopia of aromas and flavors, with deep blackberry, smoky anise, black pepper, clove and other dusky spice notes that build tension and structure toward broad-shouldered tannins."

    Rating: 93 (5/18/2022)

Deeply structured and rather brooding at the moment but jammed with personality, offering currant and cherry flavors highlighted by cracked pepper, star anise and other dark spices. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Drink now through 2031

The 2020 Bedrock Heritage Wine is a powerful tannic wine. That's pretty typical for young wines of this site. Time in the glass brings out hints of red fruit, iron, blood orange, white pepper, chalk and earthines.
