Wine Notes: The crown jewel of the Levet family’s holdings is a 1.2-hectare parcel of old vines at the very summit of the great La Chavaroche vineyard, and the wine they summon from this dizzying slope is among the most iconic in our entire portfolio. Always strikingly wild, La Chavaroche Côte-Rôtie possesses an unmistakable musk: a warm animal profile that feels somehow ancient and unknowable, a sort of profound riddle of terroir. This 2018 is stark in its power, displaying far more structure at this stage than Les Journaries without feeling heavier, and shot through with an explosive sense of minerality.

Vintage Notes: Agnès Levet describes her 2018s as driven by finesse despite their voluminous stature, contrasting them with the far more forbiddingly structured 2019s. She began harvesting on the 12th of September, and the wines proceeded through their malolactic fermentations swiftly, finishing at roughly the same time as the alcoholic fermentations, at alcohol levels between 13.5 and 14%.

  • Vinous
    Rating: (94-96) (7/10/2019)

Highly perfumed aromas of ripe black/blue fruits, smoky bacon, olive paste and candied violet, along with suggestions of woodsmoke and exotic spices. Offers palate-staining, appealingly sweet blueberry, cassis, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors that show excellent concentration and are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Finishes sweet, energetic and extremely long, displaying lingering florality and chewy tannins that build slowly.

    Rating: (96-97) (5/10/2020)

Powerful, spice- and mineral-laced black/blue fruit scents show superb focus and pick up suggestions of smoked meat, licorice and violet with air. Sappy, deeply concentrated and pure, offering juicy blueberry, boysenberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that are firmed by a spine of tangy acidity. Blends power and vivacity with a sure hand and finishes extremely long and minerally, with supple tannins building steadily and in harmony with the wine's assertive dark fruit. 100% whole clusters; all neutral foudres.
