Wine Notes: The Levets own a third of a hectare of 40-year-old vines in the fabled vineyard La Landonne, and this cuvée is built around that holding, augmented by small parcels of old vines in other crus. No de-stemming is done here, which allows for that intoxicating spice signature to reach even greater heights. Compared to the ferocious La Chavaroche, Les Journaries shows greater refinement and elegance, though in no sense is it tame. The 2018 is intensely spicy on the nose, combining curry and potpourri, and the palate is relatively suave for young Levet, with pert acidity keeping things vibrant.

Vintage Notes: Agnès Levet describes her 2018s as driven by finesse despite their voluminous stature, contrasting them with the far more forbiddingly structured 2019s. She began harvesting on the 12th of September, and the wines proceeded through their malolactic fermentations swiftly, finishing at roughly the same time as the alcoholic fermentations, at alcohol levels between 13.5 and 14%.

  • Vinous
    Rating: (93-95) (7/10/2019)

Black/blue fruit preserves, violet oil, cracked pepper and smoky bacon on the high-toned nose. Round and fleshy but energetic as well, showing distinct spiciness and powerful aromatic lift to its sweet blueberry, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors. Finishes very long and smoky, with lingering florality and chewy tannic grip.
  • Vinous
    Rating: (95-96) (5/10/2021)

An intensely perfumed nose displays mineral-accented black/blue fruit and floral pastille scents that pick up olive paste, bacon and exotic spice notes with air. In a concentrated yet energetic style, offering appealingly sweet cherry, blueberry, licorice, spicecake and candied lavender flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows outstanding clarity and mineral thrust on a wonderfully long, floral-accented finish shaped by fine-grained, slow-building tannins. 70% of this fruit comes from La Landonne and the rest is from Côte Blonde.
