Tasting Notes: We ordered 20 cases of this and the Croa (extremely limited bottlings with only 44 total cases produced of Vespo and 77 total cases produced of Croa) because Alto Piemonte guru Cristiano Garella told us to! We might be the only USA market to have these wines. 18 months in used barriques and 7 years in bottle have created two incredibly integrated wines with refined, smooth palates. The Croatina is lighter with more berry fruit while the Vespolina has more grip and spice. These wines are ready to go—no further aging necessary.

First Vintage: 2012

Terroir Notes: Le Pianelle Vespolina is produced in the Alto Piemonte, specifically from historic vineyards located in the Villa del Bosco municipality in Bramaterra. The average vine age is 20 years. The vines are Guyot trained.

Winemaking Notes: The Vespolina grapes are destemmed. Traditional fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks without added yeast. The juice macerates with the skins for 28 days. It is then transferred to mature in used barriques for 18 months. It was bottled September 2016 and left to rest in bottle until release in 2021.
