Vineyard Notes: Fruit is harvested by hand in early October from 30-year-old vines trained in Guyot. The vineyard's deep gravel and sandy soil provides excellent drainage while the clay in the subsoil provides moisture to the vines deep roots. Vineyards are cultivated without the use of chemical herbicides and are tightly spaced. The close spacing results in higher density per hectare (9,500 plants/ha), but lower yield per vine, guaranteeing greater richness of polyphenols in the ripe grapes. A strict triage is done in the vineyard so that only healthy, ripe grapes are selected and sent for vinification.
Winemaking Notes: Local traditions are lovingly followed at Moulin de Tricot. The grapes are softly crushed and racked into the tanks for fermentation. Bruno Rey vinifies his wines with traditional methods using modern equipment. He has chosen to use stainless steel tanks for fermentation as they allow him to control the temperature more precisely. After fermentation, the wine is pressed and then returned to the stainless steel tanks for spontaneous malolactic fermentation. Following the malolactic, the wine is then racked into neutral French oak barrels where it matures for 18 months. The wine is racked off its lees every 6 months. An egg-white fining and a minimal addition of SO2 are the only treatments the wine receives prior to being blended for final bottling.
Tasting Notes: Moulin de Tricot is reminiscent of the grand Margaux wines of yesteryear. Arsac's sand-laden gravel soils bring soaring aromatics of violets, tobacco, graphite, and cedar tied to the restrained flavors of black currant and plum. While the wine displays Margaux's renowned elegance, reliance on Cabernet means that its tannic power will give it decades of longevity.
