Wine Notes: Robert Foley produced his first commercial Merlot in the 1976 vintage when it was about as well-known as Charbono is today. After several years of trying to convince folks to give it a try, its popularity grew and eventually snowballed. Like its Cabernet cousin, Merlot grown in well-drained soils can develop profound expression and firm structure.
Tasting Notes: The Foley Merlot is a Merlot for Cabernet lovers. All Merlot, but more wine than a lot of Cabernets! Aromas reminiscent of red currant and cassis couple with an insinuation of chocolate. The midpalate is rich with sweet fruit flavors that resolve in a gently gripping finish.
93pts (2016 Vintage) Jeb Dunnuck 1/31/2020
"Starting with the 2016 Merlot from Foley, this beauty comes from a mix of mountain and valley floor sites and was brought up all in French oak. Loads of ripe black cherries, tobacco, chocolate, and dried earth give way to a medium to full-bodied, rounded, beautifully textured Merlot. I love its purity of fruit and it’s already impossible to resist. It’s going to evolve for over a decade."
92pts (2014 Vintage) Jeb Dunnuck 1/31/2019
"The 2014 Merlot kicks off the Bordeaux varieties with a bang and offers full-bodied, ripe, sexy aromas and flavors of black cherries, chocolate, graphite, and spice. A wine that builds with time in the glass, it has no hard edges, terrific purity, and a great finish. Drink it over the coming decade."
