Vintage Notes: Neal Martin titled his 2017 Red Burgundy article "A Modern Classic." It’s easy to see why. After 7 straight years of yields hit by frost, hail, poor flowering, and other hazards, Louis and his son Clement finally had a "normal" vintage. The resulting wines are generous, and thoroughly reflect their terroirs.

"The 2017 vintage is a great success for this small but superb domaine. While Boillot is an experienced vigneron, his first solo vintage for his own label was 2003, and perhaps that's why this address still flies under the radar. But with excellent old vine holdings in top appellations, deft winemaking and a classical aesthetic, readers should take note." - Wine Advocate 1/31/2019

"Boillot again did quite well in 2017 even if the quality doesn't quite match his wonderful 2016s, which are among the best wines that I have ever seen from him. '[The tannins] they're they're really quite fine yet they're also dense so the wines should be accessible young but they should have no trouble rewarding mid-term cellaring. I like them quite a bit as they're easy to enjoy yet quite serious.'" - Burghound 1/10/2019

Reviews

  • Vinous
    Rating: (87-89) (1/15/2019)

The 2017 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru offers lifted, tertiary red berry fruit that develops a subtle mintiness with time. The palate is well balanced, though not complex, and quite blocky at the moment, although there is decent weight on the finish.

    Rating: (90-92+) (1/31/2019)

The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards is another cuvée where the inherent suppleness of the vintage has tempered what can be a somewhat tannic site. Notes of smoky wild berries, spices and rose petals introduce a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and ample wine with good depth at the core and a long, fine-grained finish.

An exuberantly fresh nose offers up notes pomegranate, red cherry and a pretty hint of rose petal. Remarkably, the mouthfeel of the medium-bodied and energetic flavors is even finer thanks once again to the very fine-grained but dense tannins supporting the presently compact and slightly short finish. However, the tannins are ripe and there is good density and thus my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that this will come together in time.
