This pure Nerello Mascalese comes from ungrafted vines in contrada Zottorinoto, in the section Chiusa Spagnola situated lower in the valley floor. It is a bit hidden in an amphitheater surrounded by lava. Planted around 1925 at a lower altitude (620 meters asl), this unique vineyard produces profound, tannic wine.

Appellation Notes: Some of Frank's vineyards are too high in elevation for the Etna DOP, so he uses the Terre Siciliane IGT for the sake of uniformity.

Winemaking Notes: Grapes were destemmed and lightly crushed before a 60-day skin fermentation with wild yeast in neutral epoxy tanks. Wine was not fined. It was filtered before bottling with cartridges of 5 micron. No sulfites were added.

Tasting Notes: The MunJebel CS has vibrant, fruity notes of strawberry and raspberry. Fresh, juicy, with a hint of spice, the 2016 CS is a deep, beautifully balanced vintage.

94pts (2017 Vintage) Vinous 8/6/2019
"Licorice, fennel, black cherry, plum and smoke. Tactile and luscious with a sweet set of flavors similar to the aromas that are nicely framed by lovely acidity and polished tannins. Perhaps the most balanced and multifaceted of the Cornelissen single site wines in 2017. The CS on the label stands for Chiusa Spagnolo."

This 100% Nerello Mascalese comes from the Chiusa Spagnolo cru in the contrada Zottorinoto. The vines were planted in 1925 and are completely ungrafted. The wine itself offers beautiful aromatics of black cherry, dark currant, cranberry, orange oil, smoke, leather, mushroom and crushed rose petals. On the palate this is finely textured, displaying wonderful overall balance and sophistication, along with excellent depth of flavor. It remains precisely focused and pure through the long finish, as it leaves behind a mouthful of juicy red fruits lingering. Overall, this is an utterly captivating Nerello Mascalese from Frank Cornelissen which will continue to flourish for many years to come.
